2007-01-18 Science and Technology at Scientific Fact or Fiction: Premium Gasoline Delivers Premium Benefits to Your Car -- Exploding the myth that premium gasoline delivers better performance

First and foremost, premium gas really is a better fuel in terms of the power it provides in the right engine. All gasoline is a heady brew of many different hydrocarbon molecules, ranging from heptane (seven carbon atoms and 14 hydrogens) to decane (10 carbons and 22 hydrogens) and beyond. The hydrocarbon clearly identified on the pump is octane (eight carbon atoms and 18 hydrogens). This number, however, is not a measure of the percentage of octane actually in the gas itself. Rather, it is a measure of how that gasoline compares with a pure mixture of octane and heptane. At special laboratories across the globe, chemists concoct such reference fuels and then use them in comparison with refined gasoline following the dictates of standardized measures. "The American Society of Testing and Materials has this thick document on how you

With the introduction of its turbine-powered car, Chrysler Corporation reaches a milestone in automobile design. The appearance of turbine cars on the public roads signifies an important point - possibly a turning point - in automobile evolution. The Chrysler Corporation Turbine Car is a 4-passenger hardtop, a luxury car in every sense of the word, equipped with power steering, power brakes, power window lifts, leather seats and trim, and a body structure designed to accommodate the gas turbine engine. Aside from its revolutionary engine and luxury appointments, the car has the normal configuration of an American automobile. The engine is in the front of the car and supplies power to the rear wheels. 2007-09-17 News from origin - Vibration and Noise Free Engine Made Possible With Pontiac Engine Mount

Another way of keeping your engine in tip top shape is by equipping it with a Pontiac engine mount. As you drive, your engine is exposed to a lot of stressesand that can be a major cause of engine failure. The Pontiac engine mount prevents premature engine failure by significantly reducing engine noise and vibration. A typical car has a front engine mount and a rear engine mount. When this device is added on your car, it enables the engine to be kept in its proper location. This is possible, because the engine mount connects your engine to the framework or chassis of your car. A typical Pontiac engine mount is made up of a padded bolt and nut assembly in rubber or steel construction. The rubber padding is used to cushion the engine against vibrations. On the other had, the metal brackets keep the engine secured into the chassis of

2007-01-18 Auto news: The precision sports car: the Audi R8

The heart of the sports car is of course the engine. As well as being exceptionally compact, the eight-cylinder power unit of the R8 runs lustily and effortlessly up to very high engine speeds, peaking at 8,250 rpm. The reward is 420 hp and an even buildup of torque that produces enormous propulsion across a wide range of engine speeds. The engines dry sump lubrication, typical of a race engine, permits a particularly low installed location and assures a constant oil supply in even the toughest of driving conditions for instance on a racetrack. The FSI direct injection underpins the very good full-load performance with a highly efficient combustion process.

2007-07-20 Ford to debut Focus 07 in Finland :

Although the Focus ST model on which the World Rally Car is based uses a 2. 5-litre, five-cylinder engine, rallying rules do not permit an engine of that size. However, the regulations do allow teams to use another engine from elsewhere in the Ford Focus model range, so when designing the 2006-specifcation car M-Sport opted for the 2. 0-litre Duratec unit, with the addition of a turbocharger and the mandatory 34mm inlet restrictor. That engine, which has an all-alloy block, remains in the 2007 car. "The changes on the new car are mainly to save weight and to improve efficiency, driveability and performance at the bottom end of the range," said Loriaux. It has a lighter flywheel while further machining of the engine block has removed unnecessary parts and weight has also been saved by lightening some

2007-02-02 Soft landing: Comfort meets function in a sweet ride - Haaretz - Israel News

The Citroen Berlingo came in first place. The veteran French car received the highest weighted score: 8. 1 out of 10. Three out of the four test drivers graded it as their preferred car, the one they would personally buy, and gave it a grade of 8. 3 out of 10. But the Berlingo we tested was not the common version which comes with an old 1. 9 liter engine. The model we tested was a 1. 6 HDI, with a modern diesel engine with high pressure direct injection. The maximum output of this engine is 92 HP compared with 71 in the older engine version. The Berlingo came in tops, because it offers the most balanced compromise between family and work needs. The Berlingo can carry 300 kg of concrete sacs, but also offers its passenger cargo comfort, and even gives the driver a touch of driving pleasure. The test began at the Itung factory in the

2007-06-20 Slashdot The Quest for the Car of the Future

Again, if you cant tell, this is not anything new. Everyone who knows anything about cars knows you can get more efficient engines by having a properly tuned engine to feed the correct amount of gas for the correct amount of air that is put into the cylinder. The problem is that doing this has a lot of variables on that exact specific car, from the air intake system all the way to the exhaust system. Even the small tolerance changes from part to part will screw up the calculations to doing a mass production car that is properly tuned right off the line. So you get what we have, which is cars that put more fuel into the cylinder then there is oxygen to burn completely (in other words, the fuel/air mixture is "rich"). The reason you run "rich" is because there is very little risk of physical damage to the car or engine for running

2007-04-02 The Third World car war Features Motoring Telegraph

This decision was a personal conviction," said Renault chairman Louis Schweitzer at the launch. "I gave the engineers a three-word brief: modern, reliable and affordable. There are cheaper cars but they were either designed a long time ago or have levels of comfort and build quality that are far from that of the Logan. " Then along came Toyota The would-be worlds biggest carmaker has not crushed all before it in emerging markets as it has everywhere else, and at the recent Geneva show the company president Katsuaki Watanabe confirmed that his engineers had just finished research studies and started to build prototypes of a forthcoming low-cost car. "We have not decided on a distribution chain, or the possibility of a new badge for these cars," he said. "The size of the market in developing countries could be substantial, but

2007-01-18 AutoSpeed - Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart

Under the bonnet and ndash; equipped with specific-for-Ralliart exit louvres and ndash; you and rsquo;ll find a 1468cc 4G15 turbo and intercooled engine. The long stroke design (bore is 75. 5mm and stroke 82mm) uses a very high compression ratio for a turbo engine and ndash; being quoted at variably 9 or 10:1. Peak power is 113kW at 6000 rpm (redline is 6500 and cut-out at 6700 rpm), while peak torque is developed at a high-ish 3500 rpm. While that and rsquo;s not high for older turbo cars, it and rsquo;s certainly way up there for a current turbo engine and ndash; and you can feel it on the road. No boost gauge is provided but it feels like lots starts happening at only about 2800 rpm. However, it should be said that on a flowing road, the Ralliart Colt is very seldom caught off-boost.

2007-07-07 2008 BMW M3 - AutoWeek

Slot back a couple of gears to send the new M3s engine soaring. The immediacy is impressive for a production-car powerplant assembled to the same generous tolerances as the rest of the German carmakers engine lineup. Tapping the throttle sees it gain revs with rabid enthusiasm. Lift off, and it loses them with the same sort of focused zeal. Theyre the kind of friction-free characteristics that BMW touts for its motorsport engines; an association it is keen to cultivate; the engine from the M3 and the BMW-Sauber Formula One car are cast alongside each other in the same light-metal foundry at Landshut in southern Germany. Production of the new M3s V8 takes place alongside the M5s V10 at BMWs specialty-engine plant in Munich.
