You could move the car from standstill in fourth and it goes without hesitating. Likewise, if you want to crawl, no problem, you can even do that in fourth. The flexibility of the engine is vast and ndash; really, they dont make petrol engines like these anymore. Or even pedals like these anymore. The throttle pedal is tiny, as if to indicate that small, measured inputs are more than enough to make the Speed 25 thrust forward. Which is exactly the case, because the engine is really responsive and acceleration is quite instantaneous for a car that is almost 70 years old.

I think your problem is that the car rolls backwards on a hill when in A, rather than your previous cars which would stay stationary. I hear this complaint quite often from people who have just bought a new automatic and it and rsquo;s not a fault. Older cars tended to creep forward when in drive even thought the engine was idling. This wasn and rsquo;t really a design feature, it was simply because the torque converter still exerted a drag on the engine at low speeds. This was handy for hill starts and for inching along in traffic jams, but because of that drag the engine was using more fuel at idle than it would when bolted to a manual gearbox. Modern auto transmissions are designed to minimise drag so that the engine doesn and rsquo;t waste fuel when the car and rsquo;s stationary, but the drawback is that you no longer have that handy

TH: Well, we dont actually change the engine lubricant out of choice during the period of two races. It might be changed if theres a new radiator or if there is some work on the car that requires the oil system to be drained but the life of the lubricant is not an issue in terms of the two-race event. Theres plenty of reserve within the product to stand the test of time but I think its important that the lubricant can help contribute to maintaining the performance of the engine. One of the things we have worked hard on this year, particularly with the lubricant but also with the fuel, is to maintain the engines performance. There is a slight drop off in engine performance over two races and we work to keep as much power as we can at the end of the second race - the drop off did use to be a lot. Until that time, the GM products were always a force to be dealt with, but without factory engineered parts, most of the teams became second tier finishers behind Chrysler and Ford products. During the 1971 season GM began to covertly assist some team and forced NASCAR to change the rules. In an effort to make the GM engine packages, competitive weight penalties are given to the Ford and Chrysler cars. Understeer is inherently stable - once the car reduces speed sufficiently grip will be restored, which is why almost all road cars are set up to understeer at the limit of adhesion. But it also slows down a car, which is why Formula One chassis engineers try to avoid it. Oversteer is, by contrast, highly unstable. Unless a driver acts to correct it quickly with skilful use of steering and throttle it can result in a spin. But an oversteery chassis helps the driver to turn into a corner and, at the limit of adhesion, it enables a skilled driver to carry far more speed through a corner than understeer. Which is why, to a greater or lesser extent, all Formula One cars are set up with an oversteer characteristic.
