This collection of 21 travel pieces from the first 20 years of Conde Nast Traveler magazine delivers some real knockouts. You need read only the first line of these forays to be hooked, then yanked to the higher ground of travel narration, that curious hybrid of autobiography, exposition and the novel. Thus, Simon Winchester starts his rambles with this nonchalant shocker: "I suppose I shouldnt have been all that surprised when shortly before noon one Philippine morning, somewhere about a mile and a half up the side of a volcano, my guide and the porters announced that they were quitting and ran away. I think they tried eight saddles on my wifes bike while supposedly just adjusting her pedals. Wheelworks staff is committed to getting more people excited about bike travel and goes to incredible lengths to achieve just that.

For half a century, Mobil Travel Guide has provided travelers with the most objective ratings for hotels, restaurants and spas in the United States and Canada. Mobil Travel Guides proprietary ratings process is based on more than 750 standardized criteria for hotels, 425 for spas and more than 250 for restaurants, making it the most rigorous and comprehensive in the industry. The process begins with a facility inspection that considers every aspect of the property, including its overall cleanliness, condition and location. To achieve Mobil Four- and Five-Star status, properties must then meet or exceed Mobils bar-setting service standards, which are determined through an unannounced, undercover service evaluation conducted by Mobil Travel Guides expert inspectors. The service evaluation focuses on the myriad of details that

It is just not the quality of guidebooks which has suffered, there has been a noticeable decline in the variety and range of guidebooks for those areas of the world that these young guidebook writers show no interest in. 15 years ago there was a good range of guidebooks on places such as Scandinavia, Japan, Bolivia and Chile, Germany and various Pacific Islands. Obivously for these young writers these are places which are expensive to visit or to get to, so they dont bother. Publishers such as Lonely Planet had guides on cities like Auckland, so its a problem for both large and small publishers which impacts on those wanting to travel to interesting locations unless the publishers want us the public to visit certain locations as it keeps their costs down.
